Acer Aspire One AOD257 Netbook Review

The Acer Aspire One AOD257 10.1-inch netbook with a new design and the Intel Atom N570 processor is now on sale in the USA.
The netbook has a glossy finish with “water ripples” pattern on the back, the same as on the AMD-powered Aspire One 522 and 722 series. The AOD257 is currently available in black (AOD257-13685), white (AOD257-13876) and red (AOD257-13836) colors. It will be also offered in blue color later.
Internally, the mini laptop sports 1GB RAM and a 250GB hard drive, besides the 1.66GHz dual-core Atom N570 with the GMA 3150 integrated graphics. The available 2.65-pound models have a 3-cell battery, which powers the system up to 4 hours on a single charge.
Operating system is Windows 7 Starter and other features include a 1024 x 600 LED backlight screen, 0.3 webcam, dual speakers, three USB 2.0 ports, Wi-Fi, VGA out, and a multi-card reader.
Acer’s netbook is priced at $270 (Amazon, Newegg). It’s significantly cheaper than the Asus Eee PC 1015PX with the same internals and prices from $320 – $350, but the downside is that the former has more than 50% lower capacity battery. However, we can expect that 6-cell AOD257 models will also hit the US market. {latoping.com}

Acer Aspire S5 -- the World’s Thinnest Ultrabook
The S5’s delicately curved chassis is Onyx Black, and the cover rim wraps around the system body like a protective shell. A magnesium-aluminum alloy cover and palm rest provide a slim and sturdy design, while the metallic brushed detail provides subtle elegance. Clean and ultra-fluid contours from all angles make the S5 a vision of beauty.
The Aspire S5-391-9880 is Acers first Ultrabook to feature a smartly designed MagicFlip I/O port panel concealed just below the hinge. This design feature enhances the overall slenderness and streamlined form of the S5. When needed, a press of the MagicFlip key opens the panel to reveal a selection of I/O ports: HDMI, USB 3.0 and 20 Gbps Thunderbolt™.
Despite its razor thin design, the super slim and sleek Aspire S5-391-9880 manages to pack in top notch technologies and features, making it a solid performer. Packing a punch in terms of power and efficiency, it includes a 3rd Generation Intel Core i7-35i7U Processor, a 256GB solid state drive for speedy data access and increased shock resistance and an ultrafast Thunderbolt™ I/O port. Thunderbolt connection technology brings together high-speed data transfer and high-definition display (HD) on to a single cable, enabling up to six Thunderbolt enabled devices, such as PCs, hard drives, displays, cameras, audio/video equipment and docking stations to be daisy chained together. It is up to 20 times faster at transferring data than USB 2.0; running at 10Gbps, it can transfer a full-length HD movie in less than 30 seconds.

Long battery life is delivered via the PowerSmart battery pack which provides up to three times longer battery life cycles than traditional batteries (1,000 vs. 300 cycles). These batteries also maintain 80 percent capacity after the 1,000 cycle count, which means the battery will last longer, reducing the need to replace it.(2) Acer Hybrid Standby Technology provides up to 15 days(2) of standby power, or up to 6.5 hours of continuous use(2).
A 13.3-inch widescreen LED-backlit display (1366 x 768) delivers vivid images making surfing the web, streaming favorite shows, engaging on social networks all that much more enjoyable in stunning HD. In addition the Acer S5 Ultrabook can be connected to an external monitor, projector or HDTV through a single cable using the HDMI port for big-screen enjoyment. An HDMI to VGA cable adapter is included with the system. The S5 also offers triple independent display support, so images can be shown across multiple screens.
The advanced 1.3 megapixel HD webcam produces amazing video image quality at 24 frames per second. Crystal-clear chats with friends and family across town or across the country are easy. Consumers can also snap HD still pictures to save and share.
Dolby® Home Theater® v4 delivers vibrant theater-quality sound to movies or music.

Acer Aspire S3 Series of Ultrabooks –As Light and Quick as a Hummingbird
Acer’s first generation Ultrabooks, the Aspire S3 Series, has been refreshed and expanded to include 3rd Generation Intel Core i3 and Core i7 processors. In addition, models configured solely with a 256GB solid state drive(1) are now available.
An elegant new champagne color adds sophistication to its uncluttered design. With prices starting at $648, the Aspire S3 is one of the most affordable ultrabooks on the market.
Instantly On and Always Connected
The S5-391-9880 Ultrabook features the unique Acer Green Instant On technology for fast boot and resume, and Acer Always Connect, which lets users manage their multimedia and data on all their devices at anytime, anywhere, even from sleep.
Innovative Acer Green Instant On and Acer Always Connect technologies enable data upload and retrieval anytime, anywhere, and deliver power-saving features as well. Acer Green Instant On provides instant-resume functionality (in 1.5 seconds)(3) and ensures battery life that lasts several weeks.
Acer Always Connect gets users online faster than conventional connections for better productivity and infotainment enjoyment. With their Facebook, Twitter and Outlook email accounts open, users can see updates instantly upon resuming(4).
AcerCloud -- Enables Devices to Communicate and Simplifies Content Sharing
The Aspire S5 is Acer’s first product in the U.S. to ship with AcerCloud. This new feature provides S5 customers with remote access to the digital data residing on their Ultrabook via their Android tablet or smartphone. Not only can they access the data, but they can download and share it among their other PCs and Android devices anytime, anywhere, even when the S5 is in sleep (standby/hibernation) mode. As long as the Aspire S5 is in sleep mode, Acer Always Connect technology can wake it up through Wi-Fi®, allowing the media to be retrieved via a mobile device.
AcerCloud also makes it easy to take photos on a smartphone and then view them on their S5 at home or in the office, without the delay and complication of manually transferring files.
Other features of AcerCloud include:
- PicStream
Through PicStream, users can take snapshots on their smartphone, back them up on the main PC, and share them efficiently with other smart devices. Users can stream photos via clear.fi in the Cloud to PCs and other devices; photos are backed up permanently on their PC, and temporarily accessible for 30 days in their personal cloud and on other devices. - clear.fi Media
With Acers unique clear.fi Media application, users can also access all their multimedia at any time. They can use clear.fi to connect to the personal cloud and stream live, or download and enjoy content offline for convenient on-the-go entertainment. - AcerCloud Docs
Professionals can update sales documents on a PC and save them, and the documents will be put into the personal cloud and streamed to other devices. They can then go to their meeting with their notebook or tablet PC and have immediate access to all the updated files. The files will be temporarily accessible for 30 days in the personal cloud and on the devices, or they can choose to download the files onto other devices for long-term storage.

Find Reviews of the Acer Aspire AS5251 1805

This little number sure is cheap! And Acer would like you to believe cheerful too. And it has to be said the Acer Aspire AS5251-1805 is one of the best selling laptops on the planet at the moment and also after over 100 user reviews on Amazon and still maintaining an average of around 80% positive t must be something worthwhile about it?
And I have to agree t is. The Acer Aspire AS5251-1805 is one of those rare occasions when a laptop manufacturer shops around for the cheap components while aiming for a minimum specification and performance and actually achieves a laptop that is worthwhile.
The perhaps obvious word of caution is that the Acer Aspire AS5251-1805 is definitely not for everyone. It is not for example for somebody who want something cutting edge or a laptop with a bit of a bite.
So check out my index of reviews for the Acer Aspire AS5251-1805 before you spend your money.

Acer Aspire S7 191 6859 Ultrabook Review Specifications
Acer Aspire S7-191-6859 Ultrabook Review | Specifications
Acer Aspire S7 Series The Thinnest and Lightest “Touch & Type” Ultrabooks™
LONDON, UK and TAIPEI, TAIWAN

As thin as a smartphone, the S7 is an iconic combination of power and beauty. The use of straight lines, glossy white glass, electroluminescent lighting and anodized aluminum have culminated in an Ultrabook that champions cutting-edge technology and innovative design. The dual torque hinge and Acer Green Instant On / Always Connect features ensure the ultimate in control and seamless usability.
“Acer took a fresh approach to the design and development of the Aspire S7, using premium construction methods and materials,” said Jim Wong, corporate president of Acer. “The high level of engineering and design quality we set for the S7 was achieved by placing the user experience as our top design priority, and by our ongoing commitment to introducing technologies into our products that truly complement human behavior, and stimulate curious and progressive thought and action.”
Green Unibody and Glass Construction
All models in the Aspire S7 Series feature a unibody design made from a single block of aluminum with a process that saves energy and material; the result is an ultra-thin chassis that is super tough and excellent for the road. They also feature Full HD IPS 10-point displays with 1920 x 1080 resolution, putting touch control at users’ fingertips. In addition, wide-viewing angle technology provides consistent and accurate color from viewing angles up to 178 degrees.
One of the most striking design elements of the Aspire S7 is the elegant white color of the 13.3-inch model with a touchscreen display. The screen is surrounded by a glossy white Gorilla® Glass 2 lid that is smooth to the touch, beautiful to the eye, and measures only 11.9 mm thin, yet is super strong, scratch resistant and easy to wipe clean. With the S7, Acer is the first to use Gorilla® Glass 2 for notebook construction; others have only used it for decorative finish. Not only is the glass visually striking, it also provides structural strength, yet is flexible enough to handle the impact of daily use. Furthering its durability, a thin, soft cushioning is included between the aluminum frame and the glass, so if the S7 is dropped, the shock will mainly be absorbed by the chassis and not the glass. This greatly reduces the chance of significant damage.
The smaller and lighter 11.6-inch model, also with a Full HD touchscreen, features an all-aluminum unibody and aluminum cover with an elegant cross-direction brushed finish. The result is a high-end pattern, with the surface resembling a classy textured fabric. It feels smooth to the touch, but also adds to the machines durability and repels fingerprints and smudges.
Dual Torque Hinge and Flexible Screen
Taking advantage of the touch benefits associated with Windows 8, the touch-enabled screen on the 13.3” S7 can be laid back flat 180 degrees, and the image orientation reverses for easy touch-and-show sharing.
One of the cutting-edge manufacturing processes used in the production of the S7 was the development of a dual torque hinge on the lid, necessary to create the ideal amount of resistance for touch control. When the lid is pushed between 100 and 120 degrees, the torque increases 1.6 times to keep it upright and stable for touch control. The sturdiness is achieved by attaching the hinge structure directly to the forged display frame so the frame is actually part of the hinge, and affixes both the panel and glass as well.

To ensure the Aspire S7 runs cool, Acer created a new thermal solution called “TwinAir” cooling, an innovative thermal design that extends battery life and keeps the Ultrabook cool and comfortable to use. Two small high-speed (10,000 rpm) thermal fans are used; one to pull in cool air, while another releases warm air. The placement of the fans also ensures that the warmest components are kept away from the user’s fingertips and lap.
Auto-adjusting Backlit Keyboard
Acer incorporated an electroluminescent (EL) backlit keyboard that automatically turns on/off and adjusts its brightness level based on the ambient lighting. This light-sensing backlit keyboard is one of the thinnest backlit solutions currently available, and is optimized for visual comfort and easy visibility in dim environments. The electroluminescent lighting offers a gentler and more comfortable glow than LED backlit keyboards.
Thin but Powerful
Despite its ultra-thin design, the Aspire S7 packs powerful technologies, including 3rd generation Intel® Core™ i5-3317UB or i7-3517U processors and solid state drives in a RAID 0 configuration for extremely fast read/write times and quietness. An embedded Li-Polymer battery provides up to 6 hours of battery life, and an optional second battery doubles computing time up to 12 hours.
In addition, the S7 ships with a micro HDMI® to VGA cable for use with projectors for presentations, and a USB to RJ45 port for connecting to a wired network.
Instant Connectivity and Content Sharing
The Aspire S7 Ultrabooks™ include Acer Green Instant On technology for fast boot and resume, and Acer Always Connect, which lets users manage their multimedia and data on all their devices at anytime, anywhere, even from sleep. It also ships with AcerCloud to provide customers with remote access to the digital data residing on their Ultrabook via their tablet or smartphone, and share it among their other PCs and mobile devices wherever, whenever. That is, customers can take photos on a smartphone, and then view them on their S7 at home or in the office.
Price and Availability
The Aspire S7 began shipping from October 26th. To find out about availability, product specifications and price in specific markets, please contact your nearest Acer office or retailer via www.acer.com.
Actual battery life varies depending on product specifications, computer settings and applications or features launched. All batteries’ maximum capacity diminishes with time and use.

Build and Design
Acer shares the same overall look and feel throughout many of their notebook lines. The Acer Aspire 8940G shows quite a bit of resemblance to the Acer Aspire One ... keeping the same hinge shape and position as well as the protruding rear-edge of the main body that you can see when the lid is closed. The side profile of the 8940G doesnt look much thicker than a smaller 15" or 17" notebook. The sloped front and rear edge do a great job of masking thickness even further while also making it more comfortable to carry. Inside you have a completely flat surface containing the keyboard, touchpad, speakers, and multimedia keys. The keyboard is even recessed just enough so the flat keys lay flush with the outer bezel. Acer did an excellent job of making this laptop look user friendly and organized by keeping so many controls within a fingers reach.
Notebook manufacturers face a difficult task when it comes to making large notebooks that feel sturdy but arent overweight. Wider panels require more bracing to reduce flex and heavier notebooks require stronger panels so they dont flex under their own weight. The Aspire 8940G feels very well built with a solid frame and only minimal flex on the screen cover when the notebook is shut. The palrmest feels durable and shows no signs of flex even under strong pressure. The same applies to the keyboard and upper bezel, which show only minimal signs of flex under heavy pressure. The one complaint I have with the build quality of the notebook is the use of glossy plastics which scratch and smudge easily. If you are a neat freak then those smudge-prone glossy surfaces might get on your nerves over time.
The upgradability factor of this notebook looks great thanks to a single access panel on the bottom of the chassis. Simply remove the panel and you have access to the dual hard drive bays (one of which is unused in this configuration), two system memory slots, two mini-PCIe slots, and a partial view of the processor socket. I saw no "warranty void if removed" stickers anywhere, including the screws holding the heatsink onto the processor. If you want to add a second hard drive you will need to purchase a spare retention bracket, which mounts to the back of the drive, to prevent it from sliding out of place. The open mini-PCIe slot appears to be intended for an onboard TV-tuner, and as such doesnt have WWAN-antennas pre-installed.
Screen and Speakers
The 18.4" screen on the Aspire 8940G is an "all-glass" style with a protective layer covering the actual display panel. This gives the notebook a very clean and polished look, but also increases glare and reflections. With the notebook turned off the screen surface resembles a mirror and reflects the entire room around you. These reflections are reduced when the screen is on and displaying bright colors. In terms of overall quality the screen looks very nice with good color reproduction and above average contrast. The screen really draws you in while watching movies or viewing pictures ... as if you were viewing that place in person. Black levels look great and the only noticeable areas of light bleed are near the edges of the screen and only visible with the brightness set to 100%. Vertical viewing angles look good until you pivot the screen forward or back roughly 15 to 20 degrees. Horizontal viewing angles look nice right up until reflections off the screen start to overpower the image being displayed. At peak brightness the screen is still easily visible in bright office conditions as well as sitting near a window with the sun casting over the notebook.
Acer includes a 5.1 Cinematic Surround system on the Aspire 8940G that seems to sound a step above most notebooks. The audio system features five speakers, including a Tuba CineBass Booster to increase low-frequency sound. In practice the speakers produced a great surround experience, but I felt the peak volume levels were lacking. Even with the system volume set to 100%, the speakers were nowhere near being over-driven. This causes some trouble if you expect to use the system to watch a movie in your bedroom with it sitting on a dresser rather than on your lap. This can be avoided though if you use external speakers or a home theater system connected to the notebook.
Keyboard and Touchpad
Even though many notebooks are switching to Chiclet-style keyboards these days, Acer still uses a traditional design with thin flat-top keys instead. The design resembles lily patties sitting on a pond with a very thin top and the support structure tucked neatly out of view. The keyboard also offers a backlit which gives you great key visibility in dark settings. The underlying light elements are adequately shielded, preventing "light bleed" unless you view the keyboard at an angle shallower than 45 degrees. The backlight is non-adjustable in brightness, but you can turn it off completely.
The keyboard is very comfortable for typing thanks to properly sized keys and good spacing. The large 18.4" footprint allows Acer to incorporate a full-size keyboard as well as a full number pad. There is almost no "wiggle" or lateral key travel when you move your hand around the keyboard despite the thin looking keys. The keys are easy to trigger with roughly average pressure required and when pressed give off a very small click sound. The broad palmrest works very well for cradling your hands and wrists. Typing for hours at the notebook isnt a problem unless it is on your lap ... in which case your legs might not enjoy the weight.
The touchpad is a very large Synaptics model that rates very high on my list of best touchpads. It is quick to respond to fast movements, showing no discernable lag at any time. The surface texture is a soft matte finish that makes it easy to slide your finger across whether completely dry or slightly damp from sweat. The only significant complaint I have is the size. This touchpad is so much larger than most of the touchpads that I use that I end up clicking the bottom edge of the touchpad instead of the actual buttons. If you like big touchpads you will love the touchpad on the Aspire 8940G. The touchpad buttons are the same width as the touchpad surface and have a very short throw. Each button gives off a higher pitched clicking sound when you press down. Acer also includes a button to disable the touchpad to prevent accidental movement when using an external mouse. This button is located to the right side of the touchpad and lights up when activated.
