NVIDIA Directives-Based GPU Computing Program Already Delivering Application Speedups of 5x and More

Hundreds of Researchers, Scientists Sign Up in Programs First Two Weeks

5x Speedups with NVIDIA GPU Computing program
SANTA CLARA, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 12/07/2011 -- NVIDIA today announced impressive results from the first wave of the new "2x in 4 Weeks. Guaranteed." program, which promotes that programmers can, within a month, at least double their speed in running applications by using The Portland Group (PGI) directives-based compiler and NVIDIA GPUs.

Hundreds of scientists and researchers around the world have registered for the program since it was announced two weeks ago. Some have achieved 5x application speed-ups in as little as one day of programming.

Directives enable parallel programmers to provide simple hints to the compiler, identifying which areas of code to accelerate, without requiring programmers to modify or adapt the underlying code itself. By exposing parallelism to the compiler, directives allow the compiler to do the detailed work of mapping the computation onto the accelerator.

The program allows users to accelerate their applications on NVIDIA® Tesla™ GPUs using the PGI Accelerator compiler, and guarantees at least 2x speed-up of their applications in four weeks or less. Interested developers can register for a free 30-day trial at the NVIDIA "2x in 4 Weeks. Guaranteed." web site.

Initial results reported by program participants include:

  • A postdoctoral fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (ASTRON) and the University of Groningen is benefiting in his work to understand the origins of the universe using tens-of-thousands of low-frequency antennas of the LOFAR telescope. Within five days of using directives, he was able to accelerate his image-reconstruction application by 5.6x.
  • A global manufacturer of navigation systems is speeding up its research involving algorithms for real-time object detection in image sequences. Using directives and GPUs, a developer accelerated the production application by 5x in one week.
  • A postdoctoral researcher at the University of Texas at San Antonio is on a mission to better understand the effects of solvents on proteins. By applying directives, he accelerated his application 5x in a single day.

The "2x in 4 Weeks. Guaranteed." program was designed to prepare developers for the coming wave of directives-based solutions based on the new OpenACC™ parallel programming standard. Announced at SC11 in November, the OpenACC program is designed to enable the millions of scientific and technical programmers to easily take advantage of the transformative power of heterogeneous CPU/GPU computing systems.

The OpenACC standard is anticipated to benefit a broad range of programmers working in chemistry, biology, physics, data analytics, weather and climate, intelligence, and many other fields. Existing compilers from Cray, PGI and CAPS are expected to provide initial support for the OpenACC standard beginning in December 2011, and continuing into 2012.

For more information or to participate in the "2x in 4 Weeks. Guaranteed." program, visit the NVIDIA web site, or download the program FAQ. For more information about OpenACC, visit the OpenACC web site. To learn more about Tesla GPUs, visit the Tesla web site.

Review HP Pavilion tx2500z

Screen Size: 12.1 inches
Weight: 4.23 lbs
Processor Options: AMD Turion X2
Graphics Options: ATI Mobile Radeon

The tx2500z tablet features an AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology Processor, up to 4096MB DDR2 System Memory, ATI Mobile Radeon HD 3200 Graphics, and a 12.1" WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Touch-screen Display - Panel rotates 180° and folds flat.

The HP tx2500z is a Tablet PC Notebook convertible. As the 2008 - 2009 school year approaches you’ll probably find yourself shopping around for a notebook and having one that functions as a Tablet PC is certainly an added bonus and well worth considering. The Pavilion tx2500 is actually no more than an update to the Pavilion Pavilion tx line that HP introduced a couple of years ago. The tx1000 and tx2000 proceeded the tx2500 and the design has stayed pretty much the same (notable is that the tx2000 added Wacom pen technology whereas the tx1000 was touch screen only), what’s new and notable with the tx2500 is an AMD platform called Puma and an updated graphics card chipset from ATI that boosts 3D performance.

Sony VAIO Y YB

The team at Sony has completely reinvented the VAIO Y notebook with some help from AMD. The new Sony VAIO Y (technically called the "VAIO YB") is Sonys first laptop to feature the new AMD E-350 processor and graphics. This 11-inch laptop is more expensive than a typical netbook but offers significantly better performance. Take a look at what we have to say about this mighty mini.

Our Sony VAIO Y (YB) features the following specifications:

* AMD E-350 with AMD Radeon HD 6310 Graphics (dual-core CPU at 1.6 GHz and dual DX-11 SIMDs at 500 MHz)
* 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 HD glossy display with LED backlighting
* Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bit)
* 4GB DDR3 memory (1066MHz)
* 500GB, 5400 rpm HDD
* Gigabit Ethernet and Atheros 802.11b/g/n wireless
* Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
* 6-cell Li-ion battery (38Wh)
* Dimensions: 11.42 (L) x 7.99 (W) x 0.99 - 1.25 (H) inches
* Weight: 3.24 pounds
* MSRP: $549.99

Build and Design

The new VAIO Y is a radical departure from last years 13-inch Sony VAIO Y. Im a little unsure why Sony doesnt just call this the "VAIO YB" on the official SonyStyle website, but despite the confusion over the model name this looks like another attractive Sony notebook. In terms of the overall size and shape, the VAIO YB has more in common with the VAIO W netbook than last years VAIO Y. In truth, the new VAIO Y was designed to replace the Atom-based netbooks in Sonys lineup, and thankfully the VAIO YB has more to offer than those low-performance netbooks.

Build quality is on par with most 11-inch laptops weve tested like the HP Pavilion dm1z and the Acer Aspire 1830T. The plastics are thin yet firm; offering a combination of everyday durability and light weight. Although I wouldnt recommend playing a game of frisbee with this laptop, the plastics used in the chassis are probably strong enough to survivie a year or two of constant travel inside a school backpack. The plastic screen lid provides bends under significant pressure but you really have to press hard to create ripples on the screen. The lid also comes in your choice of silver or pink at the time of this writing. The best description I can give for the paint finish is "metallic matte" since its shiny but doesnt show off fingerprints like a typical glossy notebook.

The bottom of the notebook features a single access panel secured by three screws. Behind that panel youll find the RAM and hard drive in case you want to make any upgrades. Granted, most consumers who purchase a $550 laptop like this will probably be content with the 4GB of standard memory and the 500GB hard drive. Still, its nice to know that Sony made it reasonably easy to replace the RAM and hard drive if you want to do that.

Review Apple macbook pro

Good Points: Superb screen fast apple build quality (think BWM/Mercedes); runs Leopard, easily the best computer operating system available. Also runs Windows and Linux. Comes with brilliant integrated software that you would have to pay for (if you could get it) on a PC. Out-of-the-box features include i Photo image editor, I Movie digital movie editor, Garage Band digital recording studio, Web Page/Web Gallery creation, simple wireless networking. Every things seamlessly integrated in a way no Windows platform can match.

Bad Points: If you dont need the top level facilities, The 699 Mac Book does all the above but with a slightly smaller screen in a more utilitarian case.

Sony S1 SGP T111DE S Tablet Review

Sony tablet. Sony promises the usual material, but the unique characteristics of its first Android 3.1 tablet. Is the loss of Tegra offers more than just the fresh look of a magazine?

When Sony makes the company a new product, trying to capture the aura of uniqueness and surprise for the hardware, plastics, and advertising. This is what happened to the movie from Sony, which is not part of the sell-branding, "VAIO", but the brand "Sony".

If "Vaio" refers to laptops, "Bravia" TV and "PlayStation" for game consoles, why not "Tabea" or "Bronko" for the new category of Tablet PC? Marketing as "Sony Tablet" could be considered the high range that Japan attaches to the tablets.

However, it is likely that the reputation of the trademark "Sony" is that it shines directly on the tablet. Later, when sales figures bear fruit pills and products vary (screen sizes, scopes, etc), a brand could be created.

Sony is wise to enter the market well tablet. The early adopters among our customers, with the exception of those already fans iPad has a buffer Optimus, a Xoom Motorola or Samsung Galaxy. IPad these alternatives are available from autumn 2010.

Sony S-Series now encounter a compressed mature market divided between Android and Apple iOS. WebOS market has disappeared in the meantime. A prime example that reinforced the decision of Sony Android (by 3.1). Sony has developed its own tablet OS so late in the day, he would quickly put the series on the S key.

We would like to introduce the Tablet Sony S and its hardware and software, and answer the question: just another tablet Android or an alternative to "established" tablets.

Case
We have to admit: the search for Sony for a single tablet has been helpful. It certainly was not easy to plant the size of the tablets bore, 9.4-inch here, a new way. The chassis was inspired by a folded the magazine. The asymmetrical shape, jam a gap between your fingers and offers plenty of room for different and varied as the positions remain. The image is tilted position.

The Sony S is made of plastic, but is very stable and firm. The battery is composed, as usual, but not soldiers. We could not resist and remove many screws to remove the battery cover. The first and most important step is to remove the two screws under the feet together.

On the way to the battery, we realized the plastic case that offers good resistance to twisting structure stable as a sub-screen in combination with the mounting plate (relatively heavy). We do not recommend taking the device apart. The battery is the only party that can be exchanged.

591 grams of S Sony is not particularly light compared to other tablets. IPad 2 (9.7-inch, 601 grams) is almost as heavy, but lighter power supply (95 grams or 139 grams). Optimus Pad LG V900 (8.9-inch, 623 grams), weighs a little more. Galaxy Tab 10.1v (10.1-inch, 574 / 65 grams) weighs a little less and is very lightweight power source.

In general, we found the tablet easier to hold. 9.4-inch device is very comfortable to hold, because the holes on the sides. It gives your fingers a piece of non-adherence anywhere. The positive side points resists fingerprints very quiet, unlike the glossy screen surface, which - as unfortunately common for tablets - a sea of tracks to accumulate fat. The power button is easy to find and the adjacent volume controls need a little practice.

Connectivity
"Gates only ruining the show," Sonys designers seem to believe. For this reason, only the analog headphone / microphone combo port (headphones) are visible. Micro USB and an SD card reader are hidden behind the cover-extracts. The SIM card slot for a 3G version is scheduled for launch in November is also hidden here.

Card Reader SD format (32x24x2.1 mm) is the highlight, because most of the tablets only microSD (11x15x1 mm, for example, Xoom Motorola, HTC Flyer 7 ") or a card reader is not at all ( IPAD 2, Galaxy Tab 10.1v, V900 LG Optimus pad).

Sounds good. Now the 16/32 GB internal memory (versions) can be improved with an additional capacity of 32 GB (SDHC compatible, Go 64 SDXC not!). Then just copy movies and music on it and the media player is ready to use on the road. But it is not easy, because media files can be played directly from SD card.

The files must first be copied to internal memory. The memory capacity is too small for a lot of movies in high definition and the user has to delete. At home, the application "VLC live" addresses this issue and video clips directly on the Tablet PC.

The four foot 30-watt power supply is connected to Sonys S through the connector. The link shows a little difficult (hard to find without looking). Magnetic solution without the two pins had to be really useful.

Communications
Sony PSC T111DE S1 / S review (from 479 €) is only equipped with a Draft N wireless and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. 3 G version of Wi-Fi (€ 599) includes a UMTS / HSDPA modem for mobile Internet access. Both versions are the A-GPS (assisted GPS), which uses a wireless communication network, in addition to the satellite (subject to interference, especially indoors) localization.

Sony built-in camera and out. Resolution of the anterior chamber is very low (0.3 MP, 640x480), but turn the camera on the back is very high (5 MP, to 2592x1944, 4:3). Users can choose between 4:3 and 16:9 in the web camera application and use of an optical zoom up to 8x. The following figures show the results of artificial light. Exmor image sensor is to ensure great pictures in low light.

The S1 tablet can be used as a universal infrared remote control. The sensor is invisible on the black top of the device. According to Sony, the remote is also compatible with products from third parties adapting to the world of Sony.

With regard to media consumption could DLNA option could be important. This standard is to ensure that the tablet can play movies from a NAS DLNA or camcorder via DLNA media around. However, users should not expect that each file format can be read from any DLNA device. For example, the standard does not support WMV9, H.264 and MP3.

Software
S1 is a "certificate for the PlayStation." This does not mean that S1 can be used as a control. It just means that there are a number of PlayStation One games, such as Crash Bandicoot or Heroes Pinball (pre-installed), which may be enough to play the game controller.

Sony has installed the Android 3.1 Honeycomb. This is a free operating system specifically optimized for the requirements of tablets. It can be upgraded to version 3.2 (IFA Convention unit 3.2). Pre-installed software includes an email client (and other Google mail), personal space (content sharing), Reader Store (books), social or feed reader Zinio (the client in the newspapers). Other applications for download on the App Store (Android Market).

Supplies
No option apart from the power adapter, cleaning cloth and wrist strap.

Guarantee

Sony released 12 months manufacturers warranty. But the box label. As many of Vaio notebooks, which extends to 24 months warranty included. The device must be registered online within 90 days from date of purchase to use this.

Input Devices

Keyboard
The Sony S1 is operated solely on the touch screen of 9.4 inches. Besides the volume control and power, no hardware buttons on the device. As is typical for Android, the three icons at the bottom left, which often causes back, menu and task manager. The fourth icon is faded and then there are options available for applications.

When entering text (for example, by typing an address in the browser), a virtual QWERTY keyboard will automatically decrease the keyboard for almost half of the screen visible. Other signs and German umlauts can be selected via a key. Typing is as typical for Android, very smooth (no delay). But it is getting used to when writing longer texts, because there is no pressure point. The machine vibrates slightly to confirm entries.

If a tablet with a true "integration" is the preferred keyboard, the Asus Eee or Acer Iconia Tab cursor pad Keydock W500 might be useful to take a look. "Lazy" typists use voice input to select web addresses or short phrases came anyway. When the keyboard is faded into a microphone icon is available for this purpose (upper right). Even more Internet addresses has been entered correctly on the test.

Sensors
As in almost all platforms, there are a number of sensors that are used by applications or operating system. The motion sensor detects the position of the tablets in three directions. Games can be used to control the cars and characters of the game.

The operating system used to determine the position of the content displayed. A light sensor in the camera to determine the ambient light and adjusts the screen brightness automatically (can be disabled).

Display
Sony uses a contrast of the display rich IPS (In Plane Switching) with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels. The manufacturer boasts "TruBlack" and "Bravia Engine" on the site of the product. A guarantee of good contrast and brightness? We measured and determined an average of extremely intense luminance 334 cd/m2. The rich, deep blacks and vibrant colors of our images are already showing signs of good contrast. The contrast is also very good about 879:1.

The Sony S1 is at a good level of these two types in a comparison. The brightness is lower than in the iPad2 (368), LG V900 (381), but better than W500 Iconia tab (306), Galaxy Tab 10.1 (305) and Motorola Xoom (304). The contrast is almost equal to the IPAD 2 (843:1), LG V900 (778:1), Tab Iconia W500 (881:1) and Galaxy Tab 10.1v (805). Just Xoom Motorola (1491:1) made a significant leap forward in terms of contrast.

Brightness is adequate enough to see on the screen, both inside and outside. Reflecting surface, which spoke of a wheel, though. More or less intense reflections generated in the light of the sun. All tablets are a consumer in this negative trait, without exception.

As is typical IPS screen, viewing angles are good to very good in all positions. But this is nothing special in the world of high-end tablet. Side views from all directions, without color distortion are also possible with the iPad2, LG V900, Motorola Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Xoom.

Only Acer Iconia Tab W500 is a small exception. These viewing angles of first order are not comparable with the laptop as the viewing angle and color are particularly low consumption TN built in 95% of the time. One of the few exceptions is Lenovo Thinkpad X220 with IPS screen.

Performance
Meanwhile, most tablets of brand A, are equipped with two Nvidia Tegra (1 GHz). Its compact design and performance to enjoy great popularity. We find the A100/A500 Tab Tegra Iconia Acer, Asus Eee Cursor Pad / transformer, the streak of seven Tab Dell, LG Optimus Pad V900, Motorola Xoom, Toshiba AC100-10V, and Galaxy 10. The Apple iPhone 2 A5 (0.9 GHz) is an exception.

Nvidia Tegra 2 is a "system on a chip" (SoC). That means dual-core Cortex A9, the CPU, the GeForce (Ultra-low performance), RAM and sound card are combined together in death.

The two Tegra has a maximum speed of the system clock of 1000 MHz. This clock remains at this level of stress-induced or 720p video games. The highest rate clock lasted only 1:30 hours in our test case (16 hours) with a lot of idling, Web browser, CPU / GPU benchmarks, and some waiting (4 hours of deep sleep ). The clock was below 216 MHz (09:30 hours). The Tegra 250 used high clock frequencies of 760, 608 and 456 MHz is very rare. The advantage of the clock variable is that it saves energy and thus extend the battery life in laptops.

Sony S1 reached a good position in Google V8 benchmark (JavaScript, the speed of web browser). LG and Motorola V900 Optimus Xoom is slightly faster. Linpack Pro (floating point operations per second) only consider the CPU speed. Most systems Tegra 2 is online here, and S1 is no exception. Just Galaxy Tab 10.1 broke a rate significantly higher here.

Our S1 suddenly behind all Tegra 2 and other platforms in the reference quadrant (CPU, GPU test). We can not explain this decrease because the hardware is the same. S1 and the productivity index are playing at a high level Smartbench 2011 (CPU, GPU test). However, Sony can not reach the level of Xoom Motorola really good game.

In return, the result is very good Browsermark (JavaScript / HTML capabilities of smartphones). His 89,600 points are very close to the best scores Optimus LG V900, Xoom and the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The SunSpider test (JavaScript only) ends up with the Optimus LG V900, Xoom, and A100 Iconia Galaxy Tab 10.1 with about 2,100 points. The S1 slight advantage from 80 to 140 points is only marginal on this scale. Benchmarks Sony tablet proves a good performance expected Tegra 250, combined with the Android 3.1.

Gaming Apps
The label "certified PlayStation" sounds like a heavyweight entertainer. But before that there is and there will be a number (base charge) PS1 games can be played perfectly on the virtual controller. Crash Banicoot Pinball Heroes is preinstalled and as aperitifs.

However, it is not necessary to play the games of the old saw that "Tegra Zone" is a fairly wide range of games for the Android system interval (fee-based/free). Nvidia graphics card strong enough mini-installed with the Tegra 250 chips.

Process 8 cores (4 pixels, 4 vertex shaders). For comparison: the new entry-level gaming GPU, like the 540 GT, it has 96 unified shaders. The only exception is the film based on the AMD Fusion for Windows Iconia W500 Acer system with the Radeon HD 6250 (80 shaders), which is actively cooled.

We tried the following games and consider them all to be playable smoothly. The games are not always fit the screen size of the tablet. While air strikes and HD Lane Splitter only be played in widescreen mode the picture.

The tablet could not change the alignment of the image in the game either. The reason: Currently, many games are still optimized for smartphones. As in the past, PC games to be the first tried in the demo version to verify their functionality before purchasing.

Emissions

System noise
Since Sony is not a fan of the film, it is absolutely quiet. Each tablet of this forum was able to work without the fan until the Tegra 250 is due to a TDP of just one watt. The exceptions are compressed Windows, such as Acer Iconia W500, which operate the netbook platform.

Temperature
The overheating of internal components spread over the area of the touch screen on the top left and bottom cover on the bottom. Thus, the screen becomes warm during normal use. The temperature rise selectively to almost 40 degrees (104F) when filled with 720p and benchmarks.

It a movie very hot, especially if we look at the diagram, "blue" thermal Motorola Xoom (the load of more than ~ 25 ° C/77F), Galaxy Tab 10.1 (against more than ~ 26 ° C/79F) and Acer Iconia Tab W500 (load more than ~ 28 ° C/82F). Only the LG V900 is similar to high temperatures.

However, the user will not notice much of the residual heat when holding the tablet in the shape of the box. The toes are well protected from the hot zone of the holes on the sides.

Speakers
Two stereo speakers are responsible for audio output. Are in the box on the right and left, and emit their sounds small, visible breaking. Because these small openings are recessed sides, the hand is not covering them. The volume is adequate, but the sound is a midrange-heavy. So, headphones would be recommended for music lovers. Headphones or a headset can be connected to a combo.

Since Sony is not a fan of the film, it is absolutely quiet. Each tablet of this forum was able to work without the fan until the Tegra 250 is due to a TDP of just one watt. The exceptions are compressed Windows, such as Acer Iconia W500, which operate the netbook platform.

Battery life
We measure the energy of the Sony S1 with a voltmeter that is connected to the rack adapter 30 watts. The battery charges fully in all measurements. S1 needs 3.1 to 6 watts at idle. This is a broad enough range that is very close to the power load of 6.3 watts. This is a typical value of a two Tegra: LG V900 (7.0 W), Galaxy Tab 10.1 (8.2w), Motorola Xoom (6.3 W).

Striking and relevant for practical use is the relatively high standby consumption of 1.6 watts. On the other hand, Motorola Xoom (0.1W) very economical. Consumption of a Galaxy Tab 10.1 (0.6 W) and an LG V900 (0.15 W) is still reasonable. The result of this "leak" was under the battery capacity has dropped from 75 to 69% within seven hours of sleep.

A 18.5 Wh Lithium-ion is responsible for the battery life of up to just under seven hours. This ability is very low compared to other tablets: iPad2 (25 Wh), Acer Iconia Loss (35 Wh), Motorola Xoom (24.5 Wh). It has provided the battery seems low in comparison.

S1 administers 5:30 pm in the mixed test (WLAN test) with an average brightness. This test is a mixture of site navigation and watch videos. Galaxy Lose 10.1v (9:35), leaving all others far behind in this test. LG V900 (7:15) iPad2 (7:30) Xoom and Motorola (7:26) also last longer.

S1 turns out to be a little more efficient when playing a video (DVD) test. 6:28 hours is possible when the wireless module is disabled. The stress test consisted of a loop video (720p), a large number of games opened, and the maximum brightness in the case of S1. Sony tablet is removed after hours of 3:52.

Verdict
With S1, the Sony is a tablet that can remain in the range of the best restaurants in the Android Market. Multitasking with Tegra 2 is a fast and stable, even dozens of open applications. A honeycomb multi-touch is fun to use, and the Android Market, respectively Tegra Zone offers a (growing) load applications and games.

S1 and meets the expectations we place on the Tablet PC based on Android - and is capable of more. The color and viewing angle powerful IPS screen is very bright. The display is only characterized by reflections in the sun. Mobility slightly lower low, but a shortage in terms of battery life. 5:30 hours is a long time for laptops, but a good tablet should last almost 10 hours until 7:30 (WLAN test). Competition makes this possible.

The total size of SD card reader seems worthwhile (not Micro!). Unfortunately, the benefit of an additional 32 GB memory is less because the videos and music can not be played directly from SD. These files must be copied first to the small internal memory (16 GB).

Finally, the price of € 479 for Sony S Tablet WiFi (16 GB). It is very competitive, as the opponents of the request about the same. Motorola Xoom is available to start at € 450, as second iPad Galaxy Tab 10.1, not currently available in German retail sales due to the pursuit of Apple, were available for 450 €. Even Eee Cursor Pad with built-in keyboard is available to start at € 499.

If the optimal battery life is not a problem, the buyer is wise with the Sony S-tablet. The customer can get Android feel other manufacturers, but no cases have such a unique shape.

    The TS Series Servers (RS300-E7, RS100-E7, TS300-E7 and TS100-E7 servers) use fault tolerance technology and handle huge traffic precisely. Network performance is greatly improved as the IPv6 readiness resolves the upcoming IPv4 address assignment issues.

    With the ASUS Flex-E Technology, the TS300-E7 server allows users to use the product, interchanging it as either a workstation and/or a server. Users can switch from a single PCI-E x16 link (this is usually better for graphics cards) to 2 PCI-E x8 links (this is more suited for an I/O expansion). Using SAS as storage (instead of SATA), the new ASUS RS and TS Series Servers has the optional ASUS PIKE kits which include a slim-profile, flexible storage options via SAS RAID, maximizing I/O performance and data protection. In the same way, the optional ASMB5-iKVM upgrade kit allows users to use keyboard, video and mouse (KVM for Ethernet) for remote system access.

    Additionally, the ASUS RS and TS Series Servers use 80+ power supplies, which diminish power loss and consumption, resulting in a lower power bill. They all comply with the EU´s Restriction on the use of Hazardous Substances (RoHS), and are designed while respecting the Energy Star requirements. This helps in protecting our environment.

    The new the ASUS RS and TS Series Servers have a built-in virtualization support that allows the use of VMWare® ESXi, and reduces power consumption, cooling and space requirements and at the same time, allow users to experience the max of virtualization.

    Toshiba Satellite T235

    There seems to be a flood of budget-priced 13-inch laptops on the market today as consumers try to find the perfect balance of portability, performance and price. The Toshiba Satellite T230 and T235 series notebooks offer a range of options that just might help this laptop find a place on your holiday shopping list. We took a closer look at the AMD-based Satellite T235D to find out whether this laptop offers a truly impressive value.

    Toshiba Satellite T230/T235 (T235D-S1345) Specifications:

    * 1.5GHz AMD Turion II Neo K625 Dual-Core Mobile Processor
    * 4GB PC3-8500 DDR3 (2 x 2GB)
    * Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    * 13.3" WXGA HD TruBrite LED Backlit display (1366x768)
    * 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    * ATI Radeon HD 4225 Graphics
    * 802.11b/g/n, 10/100 LAN
    * 6-in-1 card reader
    * 6-Cell Li-ion 61WH battery, 45W Power Supply
    * Dimensions: (W x L x H) 12.7" x 8.8" x 0.8"/1.1"
    * Weight: 3lbs 13oz (with 6-cell battery)
    * Price as configured: $599.99

    Build and Design
    The Toshiba Satellite T230 and T235 series notebooks are an update to last years T130 and T135 notebooks. These thin and light 13-inch notebooks are designed to offer consumers a stylish alternative to netbooks with better performance and a larger screen for a modest increase in price. Toshiba keeps the profile only a fraction of an inch thicker than the USB ports on the side of the notebook, though this is done in large part by cutting out things like an ExpressCard slot and optical drive. For the average user this notebook has all the advantages of a standard computer--a high resolution display, a full-size keyboard and a dual-core processor--but none of the bulk. The combination of black and silver plastics give the T235D a very modern appearance, but we werent particularly impressed by the durability of the mirror-like chrome finish around the keyboard. In our standard drop test (droping the notebook from 12 inches onto carpet) we noticed a small piece of the chrome paint flaked off the notebook. Its safe to say that if the finish cant survive a 12-inch drop onto carpet it wont hold up well to serious abuse.

    Laptop Dell XPS 15z Reviews

    Dell XPS 15z Reviews

    Author: Patricia E. Klem

    As a big head of computer manufacture, Dell also brings us many surprises. The following are some detailed reviews of Dell XPS 15z. Dell XPS 15z delivers the power you need inside one of the thinnest 15" PCs on the planet. Easy-to-use Dell Stage software keeps the things you care about at your fingertips, giving you the best of everything while sacrificing nothing.

    The new XPS 15z is a fresh start, although it carries over a few touches, such as the inset lid hinges that move the screen slightly closer to the user. Otherwise, this is a sleek metallic box, less than 2.5cm thick and thankfully monochrome — except for some chrome borders around the edge. Yes, its very thin, but not as thin as the 15in. MacBook Pro. But honestly, the two are within a hair of each other. Despite the slimness of the body, the XPS 15z still feels sturdy and solid; its dense, but not too heavy.
    The interior is sparse, with only a backlit keyboard, a touchpad, a power button and a pair of large speaker grilles on either side of the keyboard. In many current 15in. notebooks, youll find a keyboard paired with a separate number pad, but in this case the speakers eat up that space (and then some). Although its very usable, the keyboard looks and feels small, and the shallow island-style keys arent the most comfortable for long-term typing. The keyboard is backlit, but at some angles, the pale silver keys and the white backlight combined to wash out the actual letters, making it hard for non-touch-typists to see.
    The large multitouch touch pad is generously sized, but its not one of the newer clickpad-style ones lately. Instead, its a flat pad with two large mouse buttons beneath it. Its native resolution is 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. The screen lacks the edge-to-edge glass that many high-end multimedia notebooks include, but off-axis viewing angles were excellent. Note that the 15in. MacBook Pro tops out at only 1,680 by 1,050 pixels.
    Of course you still have to keep in mind that these are notebook speakers, and the sheer physics of cramming them into a laptop will keep them from pushing too much air. In use, the speakers were plenty loud, but also thin and lacking low end — at least at the default settings.
    The XPS 15z is the first notebook to go all USB 3.0 — or at least have no standalone USB 2.0 ports (there is a combo USB 2.0/eSATA port). With Thunderbolt, Intels new peripheral technology currently, only available from Apple as its main opposition, USB 3.0 seems to have all the momentum to become the next-generation high-speed data port. Also included is Intels Wireless Display technology, which can beam on-screen video to a TV with the help of a sold-separately receiver box, and 3D support via HDMI, for playing 3D content back on a 3D-compatible TV.
    With the 2.7GHz Intel Core i7-2620M in our XPS 15z, the system performed admirably, comparable to the Alienware M14x and the previous version of the XPS 15, both of which also have current-gen Intel Core i7 CPUs (although in both those cases they were quad-core CPUs).
    Although XPS is Dells high-end multimedia brand, hard-core PC gamers would do better to consider Dells Alienware brand instead. The included Nvidia 525M GPU is a middle-of-the-road part and fine for most casual gamers.
    Although the 3 hours and 30 minutes the Dell XPS 15z ran on the battery drain test was acceptable for a 15in. system, Apples MacBook Pro ran for twice as long, and even the previous generation of XPS 15 notebooks ran for an additional 30 minutes.

    Intel readies Core i7 2700K to spoil AMDs FX launch party

    amd, intel, sandy bridge, cpu, fx series, core i7 2700k

    This one somehow slipped through our radar but it seems Intel will have a new high-performance socket LGA1155 processor out in a few weeks to try and spoil AMDs much anticipated FX Series launch. The upcoming chip was disclosed earlier this month in the latest material deceleration datasheet (MDS) document as BX80623I72700K, from which we can deduce the SKU as Core i7-2700K, and carrying the spec code SR0DG.
    Theres not much information available in the way of specs, but given the i5-2000 and i7-2000 series are spaced in steps of 100MHz, we expect the 2700K to carry a clock speed of 3.50 GHz with 3.90 GHz Turbo Boost. This would effectively make it the fastest non-extreme Sandy Bridge desktop processor Intel offers. Like other i7-2000 series processors, this one should also sport four cores, Hyper-Threading and 8MB L3 cache.
    Anandtech speculates that the pricing for the i7-2700K will be roughly $317, displacing the Core i7-2600K from its current price point. The latter could then be priced down closer to the ~$265 launch price expected for the FX-8150, and we wouldnt be surprised to see it released just around the time AMD flips the switch for its FX range.
    Last week, the first three AMD FX Series CPUs went up for pre-order at online retailer Shopblt.com. The lineup included the six-core FX-6100 and two eight-core models, the FX-8120 and FX-8150, priced at $189, $222, and $269 respectively.
    By comparison, the Intel Core i7 products that theyre supposed to go against with, include the Core i7-2600 and low-power 2600S, both priced at $294, while the unlocked Core i7-2600K for currently goes for $317. Intel Core i5 2500 chips are priced between $205 and $216, with speeds up to 3.3/3.7GHz and no Hyper-Threading support.
